Ever wonder how a pink cartoon character dating back to the early 1960s became the official mascot for Owens Corning®? It’s quite an interesting story, actually. John Peters Roofing, one of the state’s top roofers, recounts how the Pink Panther came to represent Owens Corning below.
Why the Color Pink?
It all started with a SuperBowl ad in the late 70s. ‘Put your house in pink,’ said the slogan for the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Insulation ad resonated with a country grappling with an energy crisis at the time.
Making Our Mark
Fiberglass insulation was a durable and cost-effective material that gained traction among manufacturers during that time; Owens Corning typically used the material to reinforce plastic. A lot of companies, however, attempted to cash in on the trend, driving up competition in the market.
To distinguish its own product, Owens Corning started adding red dye to naturally yellow fiberglass, producing that distinctive bright pink shade. By the 1980s, pink had become so well-recognized that the company decided to trademark it. From that point on, PINK® became a registered trademark of the company.
The Pink Company Spokes-Character
And at the time, no cartoon character was as distinctively pink as the Pink Panther. It was no surprise then that the rising insulation and roofing company adopted the slinky toon as its company spokes-character.
The Modern Mascot
The Pink Panther has served as the company spokesperson for almost four decades and will continue to do so into the foreseeable future, with the company’s agreement with MGM Consumer Products, the company holding the trademark rights to the iconic cartoon character, not expiring until 2022. This means you’ll still be seeing him appear in our TV commercials from time to time.
The mascot showcases the fun side of the company known for its durable products.
