Got a Headache from Trying to Repair Your Roof Leak?
Running for buckets to control the drip, drip, drip?
A stubborn roof leak can be a huge headache for a homeowner. Just when you think you’ve fixed the issue to roof leak repair, it rears its ugly head again. Ugh! With spring’s arrival and rainy days common, roof leaks turn up more and more for homeowners during March through May.
Typically water comes in through worn, broken or missing shingles. It could come in through popped nails, corroded or poorly sealed roof flashing, around vents, skylights and chimneys, at intersections of roof planes or through nature or animal damage to your roof.
In order to locate the leak, you have to think like water. Most often the leak doesn’t originate where it actually shows up. When water passes through roofing it flows along the rafters, sheathing and topside of ceilings until it finds a place to drip down.
Visual Roof Leak Inspection
During daylight hours go on a hunt for the source of the leak. Taking a flashlight with you, go into your attic and walk along firm beams (not insulation or direct on ceiling) and look for the place where the drip appeared and then work your way up your roof looking for wetness. You may also notice water marks and discoloration as you hunt the source. Once you feel like you may have found the source, turn off your flashlight and look for daylight through the roof.
John Peters Roofing Safety Tips
- Never go onto a steeply pitched roof, leave it to the professionals with proper equipment.
- Never step on a plastic tarp on a roof, especially a wet plastic tarp.
- Never to onto your roof during a storm.
- It’s better to wait for dry weather to go on a leak hunt in your attic and follow the water damage to the spot where you see daylight through the roofing materials.
