In order to locate the leak, you have to think like water. Most often the leak doesn’t originate where it actually shows up. When water passes through roofing it flows along the rafters, sheathing and topside of ceilings until it finds a place to drip down.
Visual Roof Leak Inspection
During daylight hours go on a hunt for the source of the leak. Taking a flashlight with you, go into your attic and walk along firm beams (not insulation or direct on ceiling) and look for the place where the drip appeared and then work your way up your roof looking for wetness. You may also notice water marks and discoloration as you hunt the source. Once you feel like you may have found the source, turn off your flashlight and look for daylight through the roof.

- Never to onto your roof during a storm.
